So called former dog breeder came into the place where I work and we have a large breed dog there. People give him treats sometimes and she proceeded to say it was just fine for a dog to live off Alpo treats and nothing else because treats are really just dog food anyway. I was dumbfounded and she was dead serious. How can anyone be so stupid?

No it is not “OK”… that is like having a child live off cookies and nothing else. It lacks nutrition balance and substance.
And people CAN be so stupid… an idiot is born every second and unfortunately I see 99% of the idiots every day at my work.

No it’s like a child living off junk food. I would research a good natural dog food and don’t let him have treats until he eats it.

It’s not okay–treats have no nutrients, most often, or they dont have enough. Plus, Alpo isnt the best dog food in the world, anyway.
It’s like us living off of cake–sure it can be done, but it’s not healthy, and we wont live as long or as well because of it.
I dont know why she was so stupid. I hope she didnt do it to her dogs!

No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They do not have the full nutritional content that a dog needs.
2008 Jun 18
OMG - No definitely not! Dogs need nutritional food to stay healthy you cannot just give dog treats. Your right this is the stupidest thing I have heard all day!!!
2008 Jun 22
no way thats like can we live off chippies lol. you can give them treats as a award for being good but thats about it, they still require a nutrional meal every day.
2008 Jun 23
probably not give it regular dog food and treats every once in a while like one a day or so
2008 Jun 27
LOL Have you not read some of the questions posted here???
Stupid is all around us?! That the most ridicules thing I ever heard. No dog can get proper nutrition from just treats!
2008 Jun 28
Yeah, that can’t be healthy at all. I like the other person’s thing about “like a child just eating junk food”
2008 Jun 28
well yes they can

Obviously not a dog breeder with any knowledge of dogs. Treats are just that -treats.

Ew. My mother bought a box of those things at the *dollar store* for my dog, I told her not to give him any, she did anyway, and he had the farts and the runs for two days. Gross.
Hell no, that is *not* okay.

Well this so-called breeder may simply run a puppy-mill and not be a good breeder. Dog biscuits are sold as biscuits and not as dog food because they don’t have all the nutrients that the dog food has.
Keep in mind that a lot of people call themselves breeders that really either run puppy mills or BYB’s and don’t know what they should know, and don’t take good care of their dogs.
Sadly, people CAN be that stupid -!-

UM….NO!!!! OMG that’s bad 4 the dog if there was ever someone that bought the dog and tried to take it to obedience school it would not listen because he/she will think its his/her food!!! that’s why they call it a treat not food !!!! I’m not trying to be rude but its bad!!!

hmmmm…they could survive, but they’d be extremely unhealthy! I would never feed those to my dog even as a treat! YUCK!!!
Sadly so many people are that stupid! She must have been a backyard breeder…no breeder that’s good would ever make a statement like that.

No it’s not o.k dogs need nutritional meals and also a variety of good things in their diet as well.

Pet treats are full of fat, that’s why they love them so much! The same reason we love candy and Cheeseburgers. Also they are not balanced nutritionally.
Even the cheapest true dogfood will be better for a dog than ‘treats’!
Save the treats as a reward for exceptional behavior.

Wow. Well I hope you are correct in the statement of “former dog breeder. I would have been dumbfounded too. My GSD rarely gets prepackaged treats. I make him jerky at home and we break it into tiny pieces to use as treats. He loves it.

No. An average dog can’t even live on Alpo dog food, beyond a certain age. It’s full of slaughterhouse crap with supplements. Of this generation, I’d really throw up!!!
2008 Jul 19
No. What happened if some kid lived off candy for the rest of their life?
2008 Jul 23
well, it is the IDIOTS like that woman, that breeds dogs… sad to know the people that are letting their dogs breed.. they don’t even have common sense! that is basically saying it’s okay for people to eat chips and cookies everyday and be healthy…. what a moron… you should have told her that to her face
2008 Jul 23
I wouldn’t do it to my dog. These treats are mostly ‘filler’ which are about the same as living on cookies.
You can do it, but your health would be crappy and you’d get over weight really fast, and you’d probably find that your dog would have all sorts of bowel issues as well.
People can be so stupid because they don’t bother to read the ingredient & nutritional labels.
Actually if she thinks that the treats are just as good as the dog food — that doesn’t say much about the dog food does it?
2008 Jul 25
DUH!?! WHAT AN IDIOT!! Some people…they just never fail to amaze me!! If the dog gets alot of treats try keeping out a container of your dogs food with a lid on it and a sign saying “Treats for _______” or keep a bag of baby carrots around and hand those to people who MUST give a treat. Dogs LOVE baby carrots!
2008 Jul 27
That is so stupid. There isn’t any kind of nutrition at all in them. Animals need a balanced diet, and actual dog food provides that.
2008 Jul 29
No. Do you live on snacks alone? Give the dog a balanced diet.
