dog treats

I have an over weight coon hound. I’ve tried several recipes for healthy dog snacks from the internet. He hates them all. Does anyone have a good recipe for healthy dog treats?
Im looking for hard and crunchy. I give him no scraps at all!!!

Popcorn, carrots, celery, marshmellows. Those are treats I give my dogs. Also try giving him just dog food. He’s doesn’t know the difference.

have you tried adding tuna juice/ meat? meat drippings? chicken? i tiny bit of peanut butter? Any human food your dog loves, put a very small ammount in. No need to change the recipie. Add or omit some water if needed.

and yes they do know the diffrence. Try and pass dog food off as a cookie to my dog…

Chopped up raw or slightly baked liver. My dogs go nuts over these. They usually get raw live with their meals, the only reasn I bake it for a little bit is because raw liver makes such a mess out of my bait bag.

you might stop the treats for now till the dog looses weight. here is how to help the dog to loose weight. take what ever you feed the dog now and cut it in half and use the same amount of green beans as the other half. it realy works i use it on my sheltie so he stay fit for agility that he does. if you want to give the dog treats use some thing that is healtly for you and give a little of to the dog.

Why does your dog need snacks? If you feed it enough, snacks are not necessary.

If your dog just likes something to chew on, consider rawhide chewees that he can work at. They’re low calorie, and one a day or so won’t pack on the pounds.

Also, how ’bout walk for that hound, every day? It helps!

    Dog Biscuit & Treat Recipes

    Basic Dog Treats
    Mix together
    3 1/2 cup unbleached flour,
    2 cup whole wheat flour,
    1 cup cornmeal
    1/2 cup skim milk powder
1 tablespoon (or 1 package) dry yeast
3 1/2 cups lukewarm chicken or meat broth

Dissolve the yeast in the lukewarm chicken or meat broth. The richer this broth is, the better your dog will like the biscuits. Let yeast broth mixture set 10 min. Then stir in flour mixture. Roll resulting dough out 1/4″ thick. Cut dog biscuit shapes from dough. Brush biscuits with egg wash. Bake on greased cookie sheets at 300* for 45 min. Then turn off oven and leave in overnight to finish hardening. Makes 60 medium-sized biscuits.

    Garlic Beef Biscuits
2 cups whole wheat or all purpose flour
    1 cup cornmeal
    1/4cup wheat germ
    2 teaspoon beef bouillon powder
    1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Mix above ingredients in a medium bowl.

Add: 1 large egg, 1 tablespoon cooking oil and 1 cup hot water.

Stir well. Roll out on a well-floured surface to 1/2 inch thickness. Place on ungreased cooking sheet. Bake on center rack, (275 F. or 140 C) for about 2 hours until dry and very hard. Let stand overnight to dry thoroughly. Makes 10 big bones and 14 puppy bones.

    Liver Dog Treats
1 pound raw liver (any kind) blended into a paste
    1 egg
    1cup flour
1/2 cup corn meal (or flour)
    1/4 teaspoon oregano
    1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Mix well and bake at 350 for 1/2 hour for chewy treats, longer for crisper treats.

Brewers yeast is a natural anti-flea remedy.

Makes about 5 dozen bone biscuits
    1 cup flour
    1/4 cup wheat germ
1/4 cup brewer’s yeast (available at health-food stores)
    1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon plus 1 1/2 teaspoons canola oil
    1 clove garlic, chopped medium
1/2 cup chicken stock plus 3 tablespoons for basting

    1. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Mix flour, wheat germ, brewer’s yeast, and salt together in a medium bowl. In a mixing bowl, combine oil and garlic. Alternately add 1/2 cup chicken stock and flour mixture in 3 parts; mix until well combined. Knead about 2 minutes by hand on floured surface; dough will be sticky.

    2. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough out about 3/8 inch thick. Cut out bone shapes; place on prepared baking sheet. Bake 10 minutes, rotate baking sheet, and baste with remaining 3 tablespoons chicken stock. Bake 10 minutes longer. Turn off oven, leaving oven door closed. Leave pan in oven for 1 1/2 hours longer

Natural banlance has a really good dog treat. My dogs love the soft roll treats. We use it for training. They also like the hard treats to. They are very healthy treats. You can get them at agways, petco and petsmart.

If you have an overweight dog you need to cut out the snacks. He should be on a calorie restricted diet (such as Eukanuba - and they have calorie restricted treats as well). If you must have a “snack” try dehydrated beef liver - 99% of dogs LOVE it, it’s a safe and healthy treat.
Be careful with feeding human foods, there are many that are toxic to dogs and may also contribute (in an already overweight dog) to diabetes, pancreatitis and heart failure.

Our Vet gave us the following diet for our overweight Great Dane, and in 6 months she lost 10kgs.

Day one: Feed B.A.R.F - look this up on the net if you don’t know what it is.

Day 2: Feed MASHED veggies - don’t include potato, corn or carrot but do feed a higher percentage of Pumpkin - some dogs turn their noses up at it but don’t give in, your dog will eat when it realises this is the only thing on offer….they end up loving it.

Day 3: Same as Day 2.

Day 4: Same as Day 1.

Day 5: Same as Day 2.

Day 6: Same as Day 2.

Day 7: Same as Day 1.

    And then the cycle continues.

Plenty of off leash running and play in an off lead park will also do the world of good.

Stop giving your dog treats, they don’t need them.

While snacks are important don’t forget exercise.
