Hello. I told my parents that I would buy the basic supplies and I’m just wondering how much it will cost. I live in Canada, so Canadian website links or prices are greatly appreciated! Thank you!!
I’m not in Canada but I budget $1000 a year for quality food ,bedding, toys and vet care for each my dogs. I usually end up spending more since there are unexpected vet visits at least once or twice a year.
I don’t know canadian prices, but I get my dog’s food and stuff at a Farmer’s feed supply store. It is SO much cheaper then the pet store. In all honesty most dogs love hand made toys just the same as bought. You can figure out what she likes and doesn’t when you are around her more. I get huge packs of hot dogs and give those as treats. The previous owner would buy those marrow bones from the butcher shop (ask around) for cheap. Once she’s cleaned it out put peanut butter in it and freeze it. Pet-Co has bulk raw hide toys too. I went a little over board and bought lots of treats, a bed, leash, collar, food for about 150.00. But depending on your dog (mines a large adult) you could probably get it down. Shop around and good luck! Dogs enjoy your company more than any treat or toy in the world. Make sure when she is home alone she has plenty of chew toys/bones. You’ll get home and see the bone and think thank god thats not my house!
p.s. I’m not sure how old you are, but I bet your parents will really chip in once they know you are responsible and serious!
I’m not in Canada, but I can tell you what I’ve bought and about what it costs here (US).
Adequate dog house or other shelter ($40-$200+)
Water dish ($5)
Food dish ($5)
Food ($4-$20)
Collar ($3-$50)
Lead ($4-$30)
Spay/Neuter ($80-$200 depending on dog size)
Dog toys ($3-????)
Heartworm protection ($15 approximately)
Flea and tick protection ($15 approximately)
The list could go on and on depending on your desired level of care. These things are just pretty basic. If you adopt a dog it may already be altered (spayed/neutered) which would eliminate this cost. I’ve also used old socks with holes in the toes for toys - just a tie a not in the middle of the sock! I also have toothbrushes for my dogs, toothpaste, and I keep various doggie meds on hand in case I need them. I also put brewers yeast, garlic, and flax oil in their food to help keep fleas, ticks, and mosquitos off of them.
Good luck!
When you first get a dog,You must have dog bowls, dog food (You can find cheap dog food at drugstores anywhere for 2.00 dollars around here, they might be higher in Canada.)If your dog is inside you need to buy puppy training pads,a bed and toys that dont have stuffing in it,so it won’t get everywhere. If its going to be outside it needs a small pen,but you dont have to get that. Also a leash for frequent walks at the park, let the dog run free if you have a fenced in yard.Teach your dog not to go on the road.Your dog must have water at all times.Thats about it,good luck with your new doggy!
i also live in canada and have JUST bought everything i need for a pup. i got a crate of for 85$ i got the biggest one there was tho they ranged from 20$ for a shitzu sized one to 85$ for a husky lab sized one
after that i got lead coller and a gentel lead for 40$ (rens pet depot in toronto)
i got 2 metal dishes for 5$ each at petsmart
i cool dog doo bag carrier that clips onto the leach for 10$
and i spent about 40$ on a bunch of cool toys(that i probably like more then the dog)
i got a husky so i got a couple higher end fur brushes for 20-40$ each.
and then at petsmart a tag the says the dogs name and our phone number
dog’s are not cheap
Kijiji.ca will help you ALOT i found quite i few things on there and probably saved myself over 100$
