Leash, collar, dog dish and water bowl… and you’ll need a bed or a blanket for him to sleep on and maybe some kind of chew toy or bone. Also food… and you’ll want to make an appointment and take him to a vet within a week of getting him (just in case.)

I would say dog food, food and water dishes, a collar and a leash (they may provide this depending on the shelter), if it is going to be outdoors it will need a dog house, indoors I would say just say give it an old blanket to use as a bed. You should be fine w/ just this, you may want to buy some dog treats and potty training pads if it is a puppy or not well taught. Maybe a cheap toy or something to start with.

food, 2 bowls (food and water), a toy or two, collar
if outdoor dog, then a dog house or somewhere he can get out of the sun.
And if you do potty training (puppy) and want to start in the house then puppy training pads.

Food, a toy or two. A leash. Dog biscuits. Get canned food and dry to see which they like. Make sure you have a good bowl for the food and for water!!! Thank you for adopting a dog from a shelter. This abandoned one is going to have a new life and they don’t yet even know it. God bless you for that. You can email me anytime if you have questions. Rock bottom essentials: collar and leash

Additional: poop bags, dog food (unless making your own), crate or baby gate, water and food bowls, toys, chews, bed, tooth brush and paste, brush, nail clipper. Book on dog or puppy care and training.

You can improvise pretty much everything or leave it until the next day or so except for the collar and leash. If you are planning on feeding dog food then you need to pick up a bag of kibble or canned food as well. Chews and toys can help settle a dog in by giving him or her something soothing to do. A crate or baby gate will make house training much easier and faster. Small poop bags are also better than using grocery store sacks.

For treats, you can use cheddar or similar cheese, chicken or beef pieces.

If you are picking up a house trained adult you will need less than if house training a young puppy.

    Good luck!

I’ll give both the ‘extreme pet spoiler’ answer, and the money saving answer.

Doggy bed– You could always just use an old blanket or a few old towels, too.

If the pup is untrained, puppy pads. –You could use newspaper too.

A kennel is a nice addition, though is not necessary.

A food dish suitable for the size of dog, and some dogs are picky(also for if you are the ‘extreme spoiler’ type of person, as I am as much as I can be.) a water ‘fountain’ or purifying water dish– Some durable bowls do just as good.

Treats, treats, and more treats! Make sure you avoid corn, wheat and by-products in the ingrediants. — It’s also very easy to make your own dog treats at home.

A collar, make sure it fits. Really no substitute for this. Make sure you get tags too.

    And a leash..

Dog food. I totally reccomend Canidae, or Innova, or Innova Evo. My top picks. As with the treats, make sure there are no by-products, corn, or wheat!

Lots and lots and lots of bones, ropes, and just generally, toys. — Well-inspected (by you, for the dog’s safety) durable rubber kids’ toys can be used, as well as old rags, etc.

And make sure you’ve dog-proofed your home. Hide your cords and anything else you don’t want the dog getting into!

Have fun with the new pooch, hope I helped!

A trip to your Vet. Get all shots and dates to update shots. Dog collar, lease, name tag, food water, a bed to sleep on. Of course unless it’s sleepimg with you. Like my BIG white, not albino Doberman does.

And get informayion on potty traing. Remember, never rub his or her nose in any of it. Will cause them to lode their scent.

He’ll need a bowl for food and 1 for water. Food and lots of paper if he’s not trained. A nice little bone would be nice for his new surroundings

Make sure you have a collar and leash, bed, food and water bowls, food, toys, treats. Those are the absolute basics. You also might want to consider getting a crate to be his own little room. Some dogs actually like sleeping in the crate. And if he’s not potty trained yet or is having accidents, you’ll definately need a crate. Also, make sure you get an engraved dog tag to put on his collar! I can’t tell you how many dogs get brought into the shelter where I work with collars but no tags!

You may decide to use some items you already have but here is a basic list:

    Food Bowl
    Water Bowl
Dog Food appropriate to age/health of dog
    Leash
Collar [the shelter may give you one with the dog--check with them]
Shelter [Kennel for an indoor pet / doghouse for an outdoor pet]

Many shelters have a new pet owner package that contains some of these items. Ask them for advice on the food and information on the dog’s health — a shot record is essential.

Food and water bowls (at least two to three sets so you can wash them), toys, chews, a crate, brushes for the coat, shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste for dogs and toothbrush. You also need flea and tick prevention (Frontline, or Advantix) and heartworm prevention (Heartguard, Interceptor). You can get them from your vet’s office. Enjoy your new dog!
Oh, I forgot, dog food (premium; not those you can buy from the supermarket), leash and collar.

Crate or gate. CRATE OR GATE. Rescues can be insecure, having the run of a house or yard can cause a dog to be come nervous. And a nervous dog can either be a pee-er (gross) or a biter (can you spell l a w s u i t).
Don’t over baby. nothing to pity the dog for, he got lucky and found you!
