Yay! Good for you for adopting!! Maybe get a ball, some treats, a Kong toy and some peanut butter to put in it, a squeaky toy. A soft bed or cushion for him/her to sleep in. You may want a crate to keep the dog in when you pop out to the store. a few bowls, some poop bags.

Why kind of dog did you adopt? How is he/she doing?

Well what is on your list already? You should have all the things you need BEFORE getting the dog.

Collar and leash, of course. Food and water dishes. Crate or kennel, depending what you call it. Toys, lots of toys. And most important, good quality food, not cheap grocery store stuff, but something worthwhile spending your money one. Innova would be a good choice.
Wishing you the best with your new dog.

You need a Crate that is dog sized, two dishes, one for water and one for food, you need a collar, a leash, nail trimmer, toothbrush, dog tooth paste, and a good vet. You also should get your dog checked up with in 72 hours of adoption to see if it’s healthy (kennel cough and all). I also suggest crate training. Good job on adopting. If you take your paperwork of the adoption into petco you will get a coupon book with over $240 of savings. I also suggest a high quality dog food like Natural Balance or Nutro. The name brands have more fat content than nutrition. Check the label for the food amount. Also don’t go too healthy like Blue because dogs don’t like the taste and wont eat it.

It’s okay, I went empty handed to adopt my dog, too… just in case she wasnt right for me.
*** If you go to Petco WITH your adoption papers, they will give you a huge book of coupons where you can get a bunch of bags of dog food for free and endless discounts on just about everything else. ***

    I suggest:
    crate
    dog bed
    leash and collar
    ID tag
    food
two bowls ( food and water )
    toys
    treats
    dog shampoo
    brush

Go to Petco. Bring with you your proof of adoption papers to show to the cashier. They offer an adoption coupon booklet with savings of $260! Im serious…i work there =)
Just tell the cashier you adopted a dog from the humane society and are interested in the adoption coupon booklet. They should then ask for proof and the booklets yours. It also includes a checklist at the beginning of everything you should need.
The adoption booklet is really worth it. There are multiple coupons for free food of your choice!

Well, dog food is an essential. If it’s a pup, get specifically puppy food. It will need those nutrients. A dog food bowl, a water dish, a leash, a collar (possibly get a tag to go with it. You can make one for a few bucks at Wal-Mart.) Dog shampoo, doggie treats (not really a necessity) Dog brush, Dog nail clippers, Training pads if you want it potty trained inside, maybe a dog carrier, and anything else you WANT for your dog to spoil it.

you didn’t say how old the dog is, so some of these items may not apply. First of all be sure that the dog has the right food appropriate for it’s age. Be sure the dog has access to clean water at all times. A nice soft comfortable bed near where you sleep will help the dog feel comfortable at night. Next are toys to keep him busy when you can’t play with him, and depending on his age, something he can chew on. There are endless number of toys to buy for him. Just because the store sells them, doesn’t mean that it can’t hurt him. Wires, batteries, cardboard and others harmful items are in many dog toys. Be sure to pick one that won’t hurt him if you are not right there watching him. A good toy I’ve found on the internet is called a Muttmop. It is a great chew and tug a war toy to play with. Be sure to get his shots up to date. The worst thing is to become attached to a wonderful dog and then lose them because it he wasn’t vaccinated. Also pick up some treats so that when he is a good boy he will be rewarded. I personally use hotdogs. They are cheap, dogs love them, and they last a long time in the frig. Buy a dog brush and brush him regularly. This helps to keep him clean between baths, and helps to spread his skin oils through his fur to keep it shiny. A good leash is also nice to have. Be sure the leash is strong enough to hold him. IF you have to pull really hard to keep him from maybe running into the street, you don’t want it to break. And also get him used to being bathed. It is so much easier to give a dog a bath when he is not fighting you. I hope this helps
