What do you think about dog kennels?
12 Jun 2008
I hate the idea of putting my parents dog (well she’s more mine but I don’t live there anymore) in a kennel when they are out of town. I can’t bring her to my apartment, so I am just going to waste my entire week pretty much to keep going there to take care of and visit her.
Am I unecessarily burdening myself? Should I just let them put her in one?
When I say she is mine, I mean I grew up with her and was very close to her. My parents are the one that actually got her.

Well you would still have to go over there to let her out. Why not just stay at your parents house for the week?

I would because you sound like it is too much of a burden.
For a dog that’s MORE YOURS you sux as it’s owner.

check to see if there are any in your town that don’t kennel the dogs. i took my dog to a place that just lets them roam free in their room, they were never kenneled. they had beds set up all around and separate eating and drinking stations for them and the big dogs were separated from the little dogs. there was also someone there 24 hours a day. i was so nervous about leaving him but when i went to pick him up after 7 days he was so happy and so so tired from playing non stop haha. i’d definitely recommend somewhere like that.

I have never put one of mine in a kennel. I just couldn’t do it. I use a sitter. You could ask a neighbor to go in a few times just to help you out. Is there someone that could stay at your parents house to watch her?

It depends, dog kennels are not bad at all. (Most of them). I worked in one when I was a teenager and each dog was taken out twice a day in the yard for excersize and play time, but that was about it. Some places don’t even do that. Is the dog used to a lot of attention and love? If so, you might need to go take care of it. You don’t have to go constantly, if its house trained, you only need to go twice a day. In the morning and in the afternoon/evening. Or if you have time, pick it up in the morning and take it to the park for awhile and get it out and take it home.
Ive never left my dogs in a kennel, basiacly because we always have someone come stay at our place and spend time with them. Maybe you could just stay at your parents for the week? So you don’t waste driving time and gas

well… it might be better on ur dog to have people around her. she might become stressed at not being at ur parents home. have you thought about living at ur parents home while their away. then the dog can stay at its own environment and you dont have to go totally out of ur way if ur living there. it all depends. ur ot going to rly hurt her by putting her in one, but you also have to pay for it. i hope ur not talking about a kennel like a cage at their house? that would be cruel. dogs need love and attention and exercise. locking her up is supposed to be a punishment and to put her in one just because its inconvinient for u isnt fair for her.

Why don’t you visit the kennel in advance and see what you think of it. I use a kennel regularly - even for day care when I’m working out of town. My dogs love it and they have a ball messing around with the other dogs. One of them was bred there so it’s like her second home.

I have never personally used a kennel for my dogs
I have heard too many horror stories but that is not to say there could still be good ones out there
anyway to hire a sitter for the dog there are lots of places that offer this service these days even those who walk dogs offer it
or ask a good friend if possible or neighbor ?
good luck I know its hard cause we went through the same thing we have 2 dogs
