Dog kennels safe?

dog kennels

I am going on vacation next week, and am going to leave my dogs in a local kennel. I have left my one dog there overnight before, but this is going to be 4 days. Is it harmful to the dog to be in a kennel?

I work at a boarding kennel. It’s perfectly safe. Dogs are left with us for two weeks or more with no problems. Just make sure to tour the facility to make sure it’s quality.

as long as you visit the kennel first to ease your mind and check the place out, he should be perfectly fine!

Ask them if they take the dogs out of their kennels daily, and how often they will feed him. You will want to provide your own food, as a change in diet would upset his stomach!

I’m sure there are some very good ones out there but I have NEVER left mine in a kennel. I am pretty lucky though, I have a friend that keeps my Sheltie and a pet sitter that checks on my cat twice a day. Really check out the place before you leave them. Ask for a tour, see what size the cages are, is the place clean, is there someone there 24/7, where do they go out to potty, do they have play time…these are a few questions to ask them.

Make sure he has his Kennel cough vaccination, Kennels are fine but you should do your homework before just choosing any kennel

I would do my research, check to make sure there are no complaints against the kennel boarding, you can even ask for references from past clients, and of course view the facility prior. check for cleanliness and staff attentiveness. Also have your dog vaccinated for kennel cough. Your dog may be depressed or not eat while there but he will be fine.

due to a death in the family, i had to leave my 3 big dogs at a kennel. i felt better knowing it was at a vets. they were there for 2 weeks and didn’t suffer any ill effects. very happy to be home though.
i brought their own foods, treats, meds and dishes. as well as a 3 page synopsis for each dog that included history, temperments, feeding and quirks. expecting this situation, 1 month prior i sat with the people at the clinic and answered their questions.

I would visit the kennel first just to make sure. I had to go on vacation at the last minute one time and i had to find a kennel fast so i had no time to look at make sure it was a good one and i think it was a horrible place! Just ask if you can have a look around that facility most of them will not care also make sure you get a bord. vacc first. Most of them require it and i think if they dont then that is not a good kennel in the first place!

no, it’s not harmful physically, but can be emotionally stressful. i would recommend boarding your dog at your vet, if they offer those services. at least then if your dog gets sick, you know that they will be there to take care of him/her. my parents boarded their cat at a local kennel, and the cat became very upset and pooped ALL over itself. they didn’t bother to tell my parents, who were on vacation, and they just let the poop dry on the cat. long story short, the cat had to get shaved at the vet. it was so bad that they had to anesthetize the cat while they shaved and cleaned it. took weeks to recover emotionally and physically. now they always board the cat at the vet.

It is OK as long as you’ve check the place out. I have a page on my website that discusses boarding kennels and what to look for when choosing one. Check it out, it might help.
