I had a Labrador Retriever 10 months old. We took it to the vet to be boarded while we went out of town. My dog contracted “parvo” and died one week later . It was very sad and heartbreaking. Now…when I go on vacation, I will pay someone to watch my pets or I will take my pets with me.
Well obviously it depends on the kennel.
Visit the kennel place unannounced and see for yourself? If you are happy with how the other dogs look then give that kennel a go.
I would always advise checking the place out first because some of them are dodgy.
The alternative is to have someone come to your house to feed and walk your dog. There are really good people who you can pay to do this service. They will also water your plants etc…
Hope this helps
I have never kenneled my dogs and will never kennel my dog. As for the dog dieing of Parvo that is extreme and I am soooo sorry to hear that. That facility should have been shut down. There are some good kennels but they are costly. I hire a dog walker while I am away and my neighbors and parents take care of the other parts of the dogsitting.
Your dog is happier in their own environment but I understand sometimes this is not possible. So research the kennels. Go visit them with your dog. Look for cleanliness and friendliness of the staff. Ask a ton of questions like how many times will my dog be let out of its pen? Is their play time and I would suggest never leaving your dog in a kennel that uses cages. Pens are better. I have a friend that uses a kennel when she goes away but she is allowed to bring her dogs bed in and some of her toys and she brings her dogs food too so the dogs system is not upset. Research is your best bet if you have to use a kennel.
ever dog boarding place i have ever work at or left my dog at have been more than nice. your dog will not understand why you left him but he will be OK.. each time you leave him it will get better.. i started out have my dog groomed that way it was for a short time and he saw i come and get him each time.. that help me so when i had to leave on a trip and could not take him he did not get depressed.. also take his blanket and pillow and a toy.. make sure they are marked so you get them back and a when you go and get him wait for him to calm down then give him a treat that way it became nice to him to be left.. i give mine a nice bone real one not rawhide.. it work for me make sure to let him calm down first..
They won’t be mean to him, but he won’t be close to royalty either. He will be in a crate for quite a while, but they let him out every once in a while. Make sure you are comfortable with the kennel you take him to.
