If a dog is put into boarding kennels?
06 Jun 2009
Does he get bad habbits with his toilet training? My dog is fully house trained (crate trained) and he sleeps in his crate at night. If iput him into kennels do you think will he start going to the toilet in his own crate when he is back home? Has anyone experienced this? Many thanks in advance.
HI Guys, it will be for 2 weeks (next year!). The kennel i have checked is recommended and very clean, they walk dogs first thing, play time in afternoon and run around early evening and then bed.

I used to work in a dog kennel…. If you take your beloved dog to a REPUTABLE [good] kennel, the workers are supposed to take all of the dogs at least 2 - 3 times per DAY, to allow them to go to the bathroom outside.
Please FIND a good kennel, and ASK what their policy is as far as this - and ASK questions like: “Do they walk the dogs outdoors multiple times per day?”
If they say NO, then find a better kennel that does walk the dogs outside!
Your dog is worth that at least!
: )
Good luck! : )

My dog sleeps in a crate at night too..Ive boarded her a kennels a few times… Shes never picked up and bad habits…
They will walk him and he can do his business as normal, they dont leave them locked up or anything.
All that I’ve found, is its best to take your dogs own food, as a reminder of home, I usually did that anyway, due to her allergies, but last time I didnt and when I picked her up she was soooo hungry!!

When I needed to board my dogs (one only 7 months) I visited at least 6 kennels and a dog sitter who was recommended at the vets office. The dog sitter I scratched off the list immediately, she had crates stacked 2 high in her garage. The kennel I chose was run by a woman who loved dogs, did rescue, and was very kind and knowledgeable They came home well cared for and happy with NO bad habits. I spent a month of Saturdays/Sundays visiting kennels. Like you, I didn’t want my pup coming home pooping/peeing in her crate and start from scratch.

He’ll be fine. He knows that he’s supposed to potty outside and he’s going to hold it as long as possible in his run until he can get outside again. When you bring him home, just make sure to take him outside more often than you normally would to make sure he’s completely emptied his bladder.

Old Jasper was in kennels for a year. \No problems fully house trained.
Young Jasper was kept in a stable outside. Fully house trained except for plastic bags.
Sasha was in kennels for 18 months. No problems fully house trained.
Skip was in Kennels for a year. No problems, fully house trained
Lucky was in kennels for 2 years. House trained but like to mark his territory so has to be watched.
Two weeks in kennels is unlikely to have an affect

I wouldnt have thought you’d have any problems, Dogs normally wont do the toilet in their sleeping area, so even in the kennels he will have a sleep area.
Most places will make sure the dogs have enough walks to do their business.
You could ask the kennel staff if its posible to put his crate in his pen? - Then if he’s going to do the toilet, it will still be out of the crate, This will also be full of familliar smells and help him settle in. x

Our Vet recommended one to us. Had no toilet problems with her. They are probably the best people to ask.
I think dogs trust take in boarders to raise funds.
