VPI insurance is the one I have used for years.
Veterinary Pet Insurance.
They have several different plans to suite your needs. There are others out there but I do not have personal experience with them.
I have used mine on several occasions I have been very satisfied to not at all, but on the whole I would rather have it then not and be able to give my dogs the best care if they were to ever need something expensive.
Good luck with your decision.
Tescos and the like, Asda, etc are cheap BUT on most of their policies you are only covered for a year or for a small amount of vet fees like £2500.
The better cheaper policies are Marks and Spencers, More than, healthy pets. It’s still not life time cover but each condition is covered up to between £5000 - 7500 depending on standard of cover. You can carry on claiming until you reach that limit.
If you want life time cover, which in my opinion is advisable then Petplan is the way to go BUT they are not cheap.
However life time cover is invaluable if your dog gets a chronic condition,
Arthritis
Diabetes
Heart
Renal etc, especially if you have a large breed dog!
The best advice I can give is do NOT take out insurance with E&L.
there is no such thing as the best pet insurance…its a rip off. They dont cover normal vet bills…they only cover the extreme situations and even then the percentages that they cover are so low its not even worth. besides that they chances of your pet actually needing some of the things that they cover are very low…instead of wasting your money on insurance open up a separate savings account and put the money that you would be putting towards an insurance premium in that account. then use that as you “emergency” account. That way if something serious does happen you have it covered but if it doesnt happen you still have the money. unlike insurance where you will never see that money if you don’t need…what a waste
I’m a veterinary student, and just this week we discussed the importance of good pet insurance.
Get a good Veterinary cover, please don’t go for a supermarket one because they may look good, but in the long run they just don’t ad up.
Make sure you pay for full cover FOR LIFE- I can’t stress that enough. Most supermarket policies cover certain diseases for certain lengths of time- what good is that?
So a good Veteriany Cover, full coverage for life. Believe me it’s worth it when your pet is sick and you can say to your vet- “give me the best treatment possible, cost is not an issue”
We’ve got our two Golden Retrievers and two moggies with PetPlan. It’s been worth it’s weight in gold! One of my Goldens was very ill and we had to take her to the veterinary college. They thought she had leukaemia but luckily it turned out to be a very bad virus; the vet bill was over £4000 (two bone marrow tests and overnight stays at the veterinary college). PetPlan dealt with the vet direct so I didn’t have to pay anything except the excess.

Also, when you do claim, they are very prompt.
