Insurance for dog?
20 Jun 2008
Does anyone know of an insurance company that will give health insurance for a 20 month old Bernese mountain dog which has been having problem with walking? I did not have to foresight to take out insurance when he was younger.
He has been diagnosised as suffering from poly arithritis and the condition at the moment is under control with medication, I am thinking of the long term and wonder is I could find a health insurance for him? Or, is it too late?

Banfield (the vet inside Petsmart) offers it. My sister used to work there and says it isn’t really worth it unless you use it for puppy shots. You could try it.. only $20 a month, or something like that.

yikes, itmight be a bit too late. even normal human insurance companies don’t really like taking on peoplethey know will have bad medical problems. they don’t even like taking on pregnant women. as far asyour dog, i don’t know if they’d be in favor of taking on a dog that would have serious health problems and would definitly be a candidate for surgery in the long run. but i can’t be too sure.
here’s a link where you can read up on everything and possibly find some companies to talk with.
hope this helps! :]

I hate to tell you that it’s too late. My dog was recently diagnosed with asthma. I tried to get insurance on him but NOBODY will cover pre existing. I found one that would pay..afte he went 12 months without having any problems. It’s 80.00 month with 75.00 deductible per visit. I took mine…visit, shots and meds only 73.00, Good luck but don’t get your hopes up.

I think that the company we’re with covers pre-existing conditions (at least to a certain extent - $100 or $200), but yes, unfortunately, I think that the biggest benefits of insurance are reaped before a problem is evident. Getting insurance still might be helpful in the long run, however, because you never know when an accident or illness like cancer (God forbid) will happen.
I hope your little one continues to improve with the medication. I have heard that Bernese mountain dogs make wonderful pets.
