dog insurance

I’ve got three small dogs, two pekingnese and one chihuahua. They are all adults from the age of 5-7 years old. I have been taking one of my pekingense to the vet lately for various problems, such as bladder infection, she has arthritis in the hips and knees…I am now looking for a good pet insurance for all three pets. If anyone has any good suggestions of a certain company or if any are bad pet insurance companies to deal with please advise. Thank you!

I use the vet at Petsmart, Banfield. Their basic wellness plan runs about 20 a month per dog, but age and breed makes a difference too, i think. The good thing about it is that you dont have to pay for the medical costs up front. the drawback is that you can’t take them anywhere else. with most pet insurances, you pay out of pocket, then submit a claim, and they pay you back for it about a month or so later.

I just wanted to let you know if you don’t already, that with all “pet insurance” companies I’ve found thus far you have to pay ALL vet costs, just as you normally would. After that you file a claim, it’s reviewed, and they decide whether or not they are going to reimburse you…and that can take up to six weeks. Google “Pet Insurance”……and then read the fine print and the FAQ’s.

I’ve been seriously looking at the AKC pet health insurance plans. I like what I’ve read so far. Now I just have to make sure my vet accepts the plan. I think that what every one check before commiting to any health plan. If your vet doesn’t accept one health plann than you have to see which they do accept and see if that one is one you would consider too.

You never mentioned where you lived. But I congrat you on deciding to get vet insurance. I live in Canada and use VETINSURANCE (the name of the company) and they are great. They have no problem answering my questions and I can reach whenever I need them. I also get 90% back on the vet bill I pay. Also my payment doesn’t change when my dog gets older. The best bet is to check out all the vet insurances offered where you are and find one that is best suited for your dogs. Be CAREFUL some charge more as time goes when your pet gets older. Good luck!

Right now I have VPI and it is total crap. Does not cover most anything except shots, spaying and all that. I am totolly upset with them.
In the vet bills that I have paid in excess of $1000, I have received back about $80.00. Not great in my book.

    Hope this helps.

Forgot to tell you, I am paying more than $50 a month for 2 Shih Tzus, with one being less than a year old.
