dog insurance

I live in California and have a 5 month old puppy. She is supposed to get spayed in a week and someone suggested that I get dog insurance because it may cover the costs. First off, does the insurance actually cover spaying, if so, which is the best insurance to get? I did a little research and seems like you have to pay about $20 more a month to be on a plan that pays for spaying, is it possible to get the better insurance for like 2 months then downgrade to the less expensive stuff or am I stuck for a whole year paying that price?

I’m not 100% sure about the US, but pet insurance doesn’t usually cover the normal standard non-emergency things like vaccinations and neutering.

I’m not sure about the us but in the UK you cant get insurance that covers spaying or neutering that is classed as routine treatment so not covered a bit like, vaccinations there not covered either

I don’t think pet insurance covers spaying or neuturing… I think it’s just for sicknesses and accidents.

Only the very pricey insurance packages cover routine veterinary care like vaccinations, neutering, flea and worm treatments etc, and only a select few companies offer them. Since future insurance premiums rise in accordance with the number of times the insurance is claimed on, they’re rarely viable in the long run. I’d say $20 a month is mighty cheap for a plan which supposedly includes all routine healthcare and has reasonable excess charges to boot.

I’m not aware of an insurance company which allows you to take out less than a years’ insurance; the idea of pet insurance is to have a back-up if the worst happens, rather than to take chances - insurance companies wouldn’t make any money if they allowed their customers to take out insurance only to cover select times when their pet actually needed treatment.
