~ To be short and sweet, it is a rip off. I have taken in many foster dogs that have had this insurance and all of their owners say several bad things about it. First, they have very little to say about Banfield itself and that the policy is very “read between the lines”. The vets at Banfield are less than good and in the long run you don’t even get what you pay for. I would say open your own savings for the dog, you will make something on the money and if your dog doesn’t need anything, then it is just money in the bank. Go to a real qualified vet that has recommendations and avoid the Banfield gimmick.

you really have to read the fine print on most pet policies…. they do not pay most of the things you would really want them to… I would not waste my money on dog insurance..your best insurance is finding a breeder that has built a reputation and knows the dogs in is pedigrees…

I have heard mixed reviews. One friend has the insurance and from what I heard she pays for practically nothing when she takes her dog there, her cost for surgery is very little, however, the staff and doctors, not so great. That I’ve heard a lot.

I have VPI Insurance and I can visit ANY vet I want, they are pretty good about reimbursing quickly and the only issues I have is the fact that my dog gets gastroenteritis a lot so I run out of my coverage a lot so by the end I get very little back due to the fact that I’ve used my annual allowance up. But it’s great knowing that I will get reimbursed if something major were to happen.

What you should do is to sign up for “care credit” card, this is for an unforeseen emergency that you just couldn’t plan for (ie hit by a car, bloat, blockage etc) a lot of vets even offer delayed fiance charge if paid within 3, 6 or 12 months. It’s great when it costs $600 at the vets and you dont’ have the money to pay, it helps out a lot. then once you get reimbursed from the insurance company you can pay off the credit card.

if you’re lucky you won’t use the insurance a lot. But it’s good to have for peace of mind.

Depends on which area you live in? Banfield is a good company. Make sure you contact a few pet insurance providers before you settle. You want to either check your local yellow pages or research online for a local pet insurance company. That way, if you have any issues with your pet or insurance, you can interact with them in person. A good pet insurance directory that i’ve found helpful is You can search for a local insurance provider in your area. Good luck!
