Dog grooming requires extreme patience, TLC, knowledge of how a particular breed is to be groomed and lots of equipment, including grooming table, clippers w/ attachments, combs, nail clippers, tweezers for plucking certain breeds, crates for holding waiting or finished dogs, stainless steel tub with sprayer, shampoo, conditioner and perhaps bows and cologne. Mostly patience, very few dogs LIKE the bath and grooming thing.

Scruffy Pups
Best Pet Grooming Course
What this course aims to do is to give a basic understanding and a rounded view of the dog grooming business.

Beginning with basic bathing and handling. Culminating with the student being able to bath, dry, trim and finish a dog to salon standard in an allotted time.

The theory aspect is completed by the student at home and is required in order to complete the course.

At present there are no officially recognised grooming qualifications available in Ireland. This course gives you a solid base on which to build and continue towards City and Guild Exams.

A years membership to the Irish Professional Dog Groomers Association {worth €60} is included in the course fee. The association is great for getting to know other Groomers, learning new techniques and keeping up with style changes.

The course offered is five weeks in duration, with a working week of Tuesday to Friday.

The Practical side aims to cover :

Correct Handling Procedures
Bathing Techniques
Drying Methods
Dematting and Brushing
Clipper Work
Basic Scissoring
Equipment Care and Maintence

The Theory side aims to cover :

Confidence dealing with clients
Main infectious Dog Diseases
Basic Anatomy
Parasites
Equipment
Breeds
Trimming Lines
Correct Coat Dressing
Hazards to groomers
1st Aid in the grooming salon

The aim of this course is to offer the aspiring groomer an idea of what is ahead. The basic skills needed to either start their own grooming salon, get employment in a salon or to continue further training to specialise in certain areas .

Course Cost

Course is run over 5 weeks - Tuesday to Friday

TOTAL COST : €2,500

(Price includes Beginners Equipment Pack) (View Pack)

and Grooming Manual By Sue Dallas,Joanne Angus & Diana North {Worth €50 }

“This course is based on one to one tuition and is very intensive”

All equipment needed by you to complete the course will be provided . Advice is available on where and what to buy, should you then wish to purchase your own.

Still interested ?

It is recommended that a prospective student participates in a trial or “taster day”

This consists of a full day spent in the busy grooming salon.

“Just to make sure it is all you dreamt it would be and that you can tolerate the hairy environment and the “glamour” end of dog grooming as a career !” Also it gives us a chance to meet each other and see whether we can work together to help you in your chosen occupation.

I have been groming for six years now. I went to school and then I got a job working for a highly recommended groomer in my area and I continued to learn under her guidance. I have never seen any home courses personally, but from experience I can see problems with this particular path. If you do go the home route, are you going to be able to get enough dogs to actually practice what you are learning? It is also helpful to have someone look over your work and tell you were improvements can be made. For example a particular line may be too high or low or eyebrows on a scottie may need to be angled differently. There is also the problem of dealing with difficult dogs. Not all dogs are angels, some won't stay still, some won't stand up, and some try to bite. This can be a little unnerving because you will be using clippers and very sharp shears around eyes and ears and other sensitive areas on a dog. There were several times when I first started out that my mentor took over for me when I wasn't sure how to proceed and taught me how to continue in a safe way that didn't hurt the dog. I'm all for learning from a reputable groomer as opposed to a home course. As far as equiptment is concerned, I spent $600 just for my start out equiptment and I have really added to that over the last 6 years. If you want to start a business you'll be in the several thousand range very quickly. You'll need a table, tub, kennels, dryers, and shampoos just to name some major start out things you will need. Good Luck to you!
