Dog Grooming?

Dog Grooming

I am interested in working with animals as a career. I really seem to like the Dog Grooming industry. I’ve heard its extremely physically demanding (and I should know I groom my own dogs which includes 3 115lbs bouviers and an aussie). I also have heard it can be extremely hardwork but i think I’m up to the challenge. Do you have any advice for me as a high school student on where i can get a job, reccomended schools to attend or any other information you could provide. Also if you can inform me about what i should do if i pursue this career and possibly start a grooming business with other services such as dog walking and pet supply?(Im willing to get certified as a dog walker as well) There is a shelter close by that I can volunteer at that also offers training courses for dog walking and registering CGC & therapy dogs if that matters. I appreciate any answers or suggestions for occupations within this field too. Thanks so much for any answers.

I would start at a large pet store chain like Petco or Petsmart as a grooming assistant. In fact- its what I’m doing now.

I am the youngest groomer (by about ten years) in the area, and I got the job because of my experiance as a volunteer at a local shelter.

And yes, it is VERY physically demanding. If you don’t already have back problems, you will after eight hours of lifting squriming, excited, 120lb labs onto a grooming table.

It is a very rewarding job. Take the courses and apprentice with a reputable groomer and learn the better ins and outs… its how I learned :) It would be wise to have at least one other service besides grooming to fall back on when it is slow for you.

    GOOD LUCK.

more than heavy lifting is the fact that i would be grooming all these bratty little designer breeds. They all need some kind of grooming, but either can’t stand up on their own, or are fear biters……plus all the biting little dogs…..
i couldn’t do it. If you can, good luck!
