Natural balance is a very good dog food. It is about 30 per bag, but you need less food of good food per dog than cheaper food.

Pick a good one. What breed your dog is does not matter. Nutritional value does matter. Concentrate on growing your dog slow and steady, not feeding for bulk and muscle.

ADDED: Puppies don’t really need “puppy food” … all they need is a good, wholesome dog food. “Puppy Food” tends to be rich … it promotes fast growth. There is nothing to be gained by overly fast growth.

Feeding a dog a food that is too rich can cause a bunch of health problems. Please let your dog grow and mature at his/her own rate. All dogs eventually WILL achieve their maximum height and weight … no need to hurry it along!

ADDED again: Iams, Eukanuba and Science Diet are all high-priced garbage … Purina-anything … don’t even go there. LOOK at the nutritional analysis among the brands. I won’t recommend a specific food, but keep in mind that if you feed a high-quality food, you feed LESS of it, so it works out to be cheaper overall. What goes in as filler also comes out as filler. You’re paying for filler and picking up filler in your yard.

You can’t go wrong with Iams or Science Diet.

Iams is a good food, as well as purina, eukanuba, but I personally feed my dogs Purina Beneful, they love it, they are healthy, strong, and smart, but I dont believe that a dog food can improve your dogs disposition to being smart.

all puppies should be fed puppy food until about 16 months old, once there 16 months old adult food is fine. stick to one food so you dont upset there digestive tract. I saw what the other person wrote, any dog raised correctly will be fine. Pits get a bad wrap from bad owers training them to be mean,

Here’s an awesome site with an independent review of dog foods. Try one of the 5 or 6 star foods.

By law, all dog foods meet 100% of the nutritional requirements so it really doesn’t matter. Veterinarians are agreed that raw feeding is dangerous and no bones, raw or cooked, should be fed so I’d stay away from fad diets like BARF. Canned is mostly water so expensive to feed but is more palatable. There is a product available in some markets that is mostly meat and less expensive then canned - BilJac frozen - but it is hard to find. Dry has some teeth decay fighting properties and is the cheapest and most convenient to feed. Cooked meat and vegetables is fine as long as you follow a good recipe EXACTLY but is costly and inconvenient. There are many brands of dog food and all have their sales gimmicks to attract the human but nutritional requirements are met even by the cheapest brands. Basically if there are ingredients that you don’t like for whatever reason, say corn or some sort of preservative or if you want some extras that are not strictly needed then buy brands that meet your needs. Meat first in a dry food is pure gimmick - dry food is always grained based - but by using several grains and listing them separately, meat can be listed first to get around the labeling laws. Premium is simply more concentrated (or more digestible as some would call it) so you feed less and there are less feces but at a substantially higher cost. Marketing strategy also plays in the cost: if sold only from pet stores or veterinarians, foods can be sold at as higher price with higher profit. The worst place for info on this is from comparison web sites as their criteria are emotive based rather then scientifically based. Best source is a veterinary nutritionist or a veterinary medical school report.

Good luck. Pits are a fantastic breed if you can get by all the stupid negative propaganda.

Sorry guys, but IAms is crap food!! So is anything else you can buy in a supermarket, including Beneful!!! These commercial foods are so full of fillers and byproducts and not enough nutrients. And there are not enough laws reguarding dog food, contrary to what people think. It DOES matter!! If you what you want is a quality food, then you have to spend a little more. Merrick is amazing. It’s basically human grade dog food. There are acutal freeze dried peas, potatoes and apples tossed into the dry food after it’s baked. the wet food looks like a can of soup with whole chicken breasts, sausage, etc. The company grows all of their own veggies and raises all of it’s proteins. (they were one of the few not affected by the menu foods fiasco) Everything is organic. I buy a 30 pound bag for $40. Well worth it! Nutro is also very good, as well as Natural Balance and Wellness. (Wellness tends to be rich, so not for all tummies)Some people choose to do a raw diet for their certain breeds as well. This i’m not as convinced with! Do a search online. Good luck!
