Dog Food??????????

dog food

My dog is about 4-6 months old and he has been eating little doggy nibbles. They are the crunchy treats. That was the only thing we fed him. Should I switch his meal for actual creamy chicken dog food that comes in cans?
He’s a male puppy wiener dog by the way
He’s very thin and his ribs show through his chest. Should I switch his crunchy hard food for the soft real dog food? Or is he too young for them?
he’s my very first puppy so I don’t really know what to give him now?

We’ve got two 9 year old wiener dogs and feed them nothing but Science Diet (hard). One of them tends to ignore his food, but after splashing a bit of water on it (though not enough to make it mushy) he eats it right up.

    No!

If your dog is eating kibble well and fine, please do not switch him to the crap in the cans.

Most small dogs develop tooth decay/problems - eating wet food only worsens this. The best thing you can do for your little fella is to keep him on DRY food.

ADD: If your concern is about his weight, then have a trip to your vet for a good physical to determine if there is a cause, then go from there.

You should just let him try the canned food and if he doesn’t
like it then stick to the doggy nibbles

but trust me never ever give him human food then they’ll never eat dog food again just like my dog

If you can see his ribs, then he is getting way too thin. You need to take him to his vet and tell them the same thing. They can recommend the best type of food to feed him.

Good luck! I hope he gets better.

Read the ingredients on the dry food - if it has a lot of “fillers” - trash it and get a good dog food with mostly meat. You should also be soaking the dry food for a few minutes in warm water before feed it to him, then drain the water. There’s nothing wrong with mixing canned food in with his dry food. You can also mix other things in his food - vanilla yogurt, cottage cheese, canned mixed vegetables, baked sweet potato mashed up, mashed up bananas. The list goes on and on!

If he seems to be eating a good amount but is still thin, make sure your vet tests him for parasites or giardia.

Dry food is better than canned nutritionally as well as for their teeth–just because it looks like pureed meat doesn’t mean that’s what it is. Read the labels on any dog food you buy.

To much wet food is bad for dogs teeth…You need to feed your dog..DOG FOOD not just treats..there not enough nutritional value in dog treats..You need to get him on a good quality( dog food)….Innova,Wellness, Natures Variety,Natural Balance..Not to much wet food..Stay away from food that have….Corn Wheat soy. This can cause skin problems and allergies. No byproducts animal fat animal digest this is every thing off the animal but the meat..Wheat gluten low quality grains…The better you feed your dog the healthier your dog will be in the long run..

Is he eating hard dog food, or just treats?

A dog can’t live off just treats!

Get him a quality dry dog food and a quality canned food and mix them 50/50 until he bulks up. Try brands like Innova EVO, Merrick, Solid Gold, Chicken Soup, Artemis, Orijens, California Naturals, etc. Feed him according to the bag and then add a little more on top of that to help him gain weight.

DO NOT feed any crappy grocery store brand like Kibbles N Bits, Pedigree, Purina, Pro Plan, etc- those are all junk.

You should also schedule a vet visit and bring a poop sample for them to check out for worms and such. A puppy should not be so skinny!!!
