dog food ??

ok im just doing some research on dog food. I found one that my dog loves, however it’s going to be about $70.00 a month. (royal canin for boxers) then i found one at the grocery store and it seems to have VERY simular ingredients except for that the first ingregient was Chicken in the grocery store brand and chicken wasnt even found till the 8th ingredient on the expesive brand.
My real q is….what is “meal” like it’ll say chicken meal, fish meal. However the grocery store brand states CHICKEN for the first ingredient which to me is good.
I also compared the crude %’s and they’re very simular only off by a few.
Im prety sure rice is good for a dogs diet correct? and corn meal not so good? Because a lot of dog foods do have a lot of corn meal in the foods.
The brand that i found at the grocery store is PC Nutrition 1st…this may only be in canada.

canned ood can be bad in dogs(it was on the news like 7 months ago!) lke 200 pets died of some canned food so be careful what you buy!!

When the dog food bag says Chicken, they mean chicken while it still has it’s moisture.. It’s only listed as the first ingredient, they can do that as they are stating it as it’s wet form.. So once you take the moisture out, it would be far far far far down on the list of ingredients and not even count for anything.. Chicken Meal is weighed in it’s dry form.. So when it’s listed first you know that you are getting a higher level of meat.. There is no moisture to come out of chicken meal, it’s already in it’s dry form..

If the ingredient is chicken and not chicken meal, or chicken by products (both made from beaks, feathers, feet, etc.), it sounds great.
Never heard of PC, but if has the same ingredients, with superior meat, there really is no problem.
Corn is not good nourishment for dogs - it fattens them up and causes all sorts of problems, especially later on in life. Corn meal is in most cheap, supermarket brands, because it obviously costs less than real meat.

Removing the water and moisture provides a more concentrated form of protein and that is “Meal”
Brown rice is one of the most digestible carbohydrates but white rice is bleached and contains little nutrients.
Corn is a filler and can be harmful if old and moldy.

Go the the website Dog Food Project it will break it all down for you and tell you all the little tricks of the dog food maufacturers and what is what. I only feed Holistic foods that are grain free with no preservatives. But really that website gives you all the definitions of what it all means
