dog clothes

also if your breed needs a jacket in cold weather would you like to be able to get something more stylish than the tartan things you can get in pet shops?or do you think clothes for dogs is just silly?

No, I would not. I think people are thinking more of themseves, than their dogs.

A coat is sensible for short-haired breeds if it’s snowing, because dogs do get cold - it’s a myth that their fur protects them completely. Anything else is horrible and mean to the pet. They get very stressed out by being forced into clothes and can easily trip and hurt themselves.

It’s totally ridiculous to dress a dog up and people who do are weird!

I’d love to try dressing my retriever in a new outfit.
He’d have it off in an instant, chew it up and leave it shredded all over the carpet.
    And quite right too

I have a patterdale terrier (short haired) she is only 10 months old and yes i put a coat on her when it is cold out, i think alot of my wee puppy and i would hate to not be warm, so the same goes for her!!!! Her coat is brown, with a brown fur part round the neck of the coat and she loves it!!! I would not put her in it if she did not like it!!!!!!!!!!!

NO !!! Do not dress your dog for fashions sake. Become your dogs best friend, not its bossy owner. You will probably be it’s sole source of food, relief, warmth, and perhaps companionship. Train your dog to sit , stay , get down , roll over , heel ,…FIRST. Most pets do not like paper training, collars, or leashes. All prequisites to clothes. Do not expect your pet to treat the clothes any better than it treated the collar or leash. PRAISE GOOD BEHAVIOR, try to figure out what You did to prompt different behavior. Most pets want to please you, they thrive on YOUR consistancy. please don’t let them down….love them up before you dress them up!

I only dress my dogs when the weather gets cold. I have 3 bichons and their fur is nice and full during the winter, but it still doesnt keep them warm. It gets cold in Indiana and they need to stay warm. You could always make your own clothes for your dogs, or buy online.

Coats in the winter to keep them warm yes, for the sake of fashion absolutely NO! I have a friend with 3 Whippets and they wear coats when raining and if cold outside, poor little devils shiver without coats, so in this circumstance it is acceptable.

i put my dogs in clothes, they are both small and in the winter they are cold, they shiver less and are more likely to want to go outside to go to the bathroom if they are in their sweatshirts. I have some i bought at stores like sweatshirts and army jackets but i have made things too, out of fleece so they fit right. So no i don’t think it’s silly sometimes it is just needed on a small dog.

I have a dog that has terrible skin issues and lost half her hair so she wears a thermal hoodie in the winter. The stuff is the petshop is fine in my book.

Dog clothes are cute as long as you don’t make it too ridiculus. Your dog might not have a lot of fur so its okay to have it wear clothes but if it has lots of fur,its fine as it is and might overheat.

I have a chihuahua, and she gets very cold, very easily. Therefore, we have some sweaters for her. BUT it is only a practical thing. If she wasn’t cold, I wouldn’t DREAM of dressing her up!!! SHE IS A DOG!!!!

My pup has tartan coat… I heard that was in fashion this year??

anyway.. she has a t-shirt too and another of my dogs has a cashmere jumper (bought by my mother)… I did draw the line at a purple jumper with fake fur collar… it made my pup look like a little old lady.

So in answer to your question.. none of it is really for fashion’s sake.. the coat is when she is cold and the jumper is occasionally worn around the house for fun.. (and to please my mum)… but I’d never let my dog out in public like it or I will become the stereotypical essex girl with chihuahuas dressed in the latest styles… eeeak!

Clothes for dogs can be very silly but as long as they are OK with it, it can be fun too. Depends how serious you are about keeping your dog in the latest fashion styles.

Clothes for dogs are just another way for shops to make money. How many dogs out in the wild have you seen wearing Burberry jackets? its just daft!

I personally feel that dogs clothes for fashion sakes is cruel and pathetic….get a doll for gods sake….However,if you own a dog that does have very little body hair and shivers in the cold then a practical coat is acceptable…my dog has a great mass of fur but is a sad cretin when it rains…he wears a kind of pac a mac ( with I hasten to add the stupid hood REMOVED) and he is really happy to be out and about in it..no silly fluffy padding cos he is warm enuff..,my other dog don’t care one jot about the weather and doesn’t wear one. I think if the breed needs a coat thats fine…a practical coat..not a silly thing with toggles and hoods and pockets and I think it is downright cruel to put a breed in one if it has adequate hair just for fashion sakes.

I have 2 dogs and i would never dress them in clothes certainly not for fashion they have there own coats to keep them warm. Dogs are animals not a fashion accessory….people who dress their dogs in a fashionable manner shouldn’t be allowed to have one.

I think clothes are okay on dogs as long as it doesn’t bother them. If they are trying to pull it off of themselves or act like they don’t want you to put it on them, I wouldn’t. However, if they don’t seem to mind, I think a little sweater or jacket when it’s cold outside is a great idea. I’m going to get my little japanese chin a little sweater because she gets cold easy.

Would never dress an animal for fashion but quite right if small, short haired dog they need some sort of coat or jumper to keep the cold away just like our babys would.

actually I had a hawiian shirt I bought for my cocker spaniel and his son would get so jealous when he would wear it. If i brought that shirt out they would both fight to get in it. i guess they would fight over who got to wear the dog harness (whoever wore the harness was the lead dog) when I put them on the dog walker as well.

    Forget it………………
Leave your dog with some dignity. If you have a really small dog that feels the cold in winter them put him into something that does not look rediculous .

No! Your dog already has clothes on and it is his fur. Most dogs don’t even like having clothes on.

A coat on short haired breeds is fine when it’s cold or raining I suppose but fashion teeshirts, hats, booties etc - No!!

My retrievers were bad enough when they had to wear one of hubby’s old tshirt after they were spayed to stop them chewing their stitches (they wouldn’t wear a buster collar). I did not take them out for a walk in it!!

NO. Most dogs don’t need clothes and certainly not for fashion’s sake. Our lurcher doesn’t grow much hair so in the winter she wears a coat - either a red waterproof with fleece lining and reflective strips or she has a wax one which is lined with fleece but is thicker.
Thin coated dogs need coats when it’s miserable and cold, but they don’t need to wear stuff for fashion - it looks stupid!

I have an indoor (kennel) coat and an outdoor water-resistant coat for my greyhound. He wears it when it’s cold because he doesn’t have the body fat or thick coat of fur that many other breeds have to keep him warm.

The only other thing he wears is a collar!!

    Purely functional.

Frankly, any other reason for dressing up your dog is just plain weird and I can’t understand the appeal.

I don’t think it harms the dog particularly (although I remove my dog’s coat when he’s off-lead as it would - slightly - restrict his movement otherwise), I just wouldn’t waste money on something neither my dog nor I would benefit from.

To each their own though, I suppose.

only time a dog should wear any type of clothing is if its very cold and its got a short coat and not allot of fat eg greyhounds whippets etc and i dont think they mind the tartan as they cant see on there backs oh yeah and i dont think they see in colour

i would get my dog some clothes only if it is cold out side but if it is not just for fashion i would put maybe a little shirt or something and did you know that they have doggy shoes but you should only get your dog clothes if it’s ok with him\her so that you wouln’t have to get that stuff for no reason and it would just get torn up

My miniature schnauzer is 12.5 years old, so not a young thing, so when it is cold, I let him wear a little tartan fleece coat or a red coat with fleece lining. Just for when it’s really cold.

I used to have these hilarious outfits for him, a bumblebee suit, a cow suit, a strawberry suit, and batman for halloween, but he would be so miserable in them because he knew it made him look like he had escaped from an asylum. So, I don’t let him wear that stuff anymore because he seems to mind so much, but he doesn’t mind the normal little jackets, just for when it’s that extra bit nippy.

I used to make him wear the outfits just for a laugh… it would really crack me and my friends up and he would stand there liek a statue with the expression “oh please, kill me now, just kill me”.

I dont dress my dog up but she as got a coat for the cold weather. She gets very cold as she hasnt got a thick coat. But she only wears it if its very cold because I dont agree to dressing dogs up just for fun.her coat is a cord with a fur lineing and it as a little hood on.I think if we are cold we put something warm on so why should she go cold. But like I say it as to be very cold for her to wear it.its best if they keep themselfs as warm as they can other wise they loose there own system to cope with every day living.you can get different coats these days other than the old tartan. But I certainly dont dress her for fashion sake thats not fair on her.

I dont like doggie fashion for fashion sakes, but our parson has quite a thin coat and he needs a fleece-lined waterproof jacket in cold weather and a t-shirt in the house. We bought him a lovely jacket this year which is more fitted than the one we had previously which was a plain wax-jacket. Its a lovely red colour by the Yap company and it could be classed as stylish..but i hate the tartan look myself, and red looks much better on our pooch because of his colouring. He also has a black ‘ security guard’ t-shirt for indoors during the winter. It was the one that fitted his personality best…not because it looked good

I wouldn’t put clothes on a dog unless I lived in a really cold place and it wasn’t safe to take them out without a dog jacket.
People who buy dogs clothing for fashion reasons are so sad!!!
