Dog clothes question…?
04 Sep 2008
First off, let me say, I generally think it’s dumb to put dog clothes on your dog… but… some breeds need them in the colder weather. With that being said, how long does it usually take a dog to get used to wearing them? My 12 week old Yorkie puppy had to be shaved yesterday due to her fur being matted, (she looks crazy! she looks like she had a ‘big-head’ cheat put on her from a video game… they left the hair on her head and face!) Anyways, she shivers in the morning when she goes outside so much that she won’t go to the bathroom in her usual amount of time. She waits for the warm house, which is not going to be allowed, so I have to keep her warm outside but when I put something on her she just stops moving. Should I keep her in a shirt all day to get her use to it? How long before I say enough is enough and I can stop tortuing her?

Keep her in the shirt so she will get used to it and to keep her warm.
She will take a day or two to realize that what you are doing is to keep her safe.
Good luck

i think its a little dumb if its only for shallow reasons but if it is actually helping your poor pup i think it is great. She will get used to it if you keep it on all day but might be a little freaked out

First let me say I am like you and think that it’s stupid to put clothes on a dog. But anyways, there are puppy mats that allow puppies who aren’t potty trained to use them. But that could cause problems because then you have to train her to go back outside when her fur grows back, and they smell. But you could also train her to go outside when it’s warmer and she won’t shiver so much.

When I took my chihuahua mix to Oregon he had to wear clothes and did the same thing as your Yorkie. I just kept putting him in it…eventually he appreciated it! I totally agree with you about making pets fashion statements….it is sooooo dumb! But, if it is out of necessity I say go for it!
