View on dog clothes?
14 Oct 2008
Ok I have seen so many people post comments like Dont have your dog wear doggie clothes blah blah blah… well now this is what I have to say.
I think dont wear doggie clothes if your dog is uncomforatble in them. Dont wear doggie clothes in the summer exspecially with long haired dogs.
But if you have a hairless dog or a dog that just likes wearing clothes in the winter why not.
I have seen alot of dogs.. personaly my moms dog and she wears a sweater and hates you to take it off of her, she even asked you to put it back on her, She loves to be warm.
Really what is the harm of keeping a pet warm if they enjoy being in the sweater? Even vet recomend this.
What is comes down to though is people are going to wear clothes on their pets and why should you care if this is a new trend or whatever as long as the pets healthy and happy.
Yes I realize there are ppl out their that have their pet wear clothes just cause they want to but dont assume everyone is like them.

Is this a question or a rant? Just wondering…
My view: to each his/her own.

R u justifying trying to turn your dog into a doll. Who invented the dog with no hair any way, how ridiculous.
Whpptumn : So why do they need cloths if they were breed in a hot climate, or maybe more to the point why are they now in a cold climate. Doesn’t sound right to me.
No really, sorry I am just being a b****, of course you can dress your dog up if you want to , who am I to judge you. Having a real hard time with becoming like people on here

Well I do not put my dogs in doll clothes. My husky wears boots to keep his paws from freezing. I walk my black dog with neon safety vest on, so she doesnt get ran over. My tiny mutt wears a sweater because he is so little and gets cold easily. I think there is nothing wrong with something functional, as they long as they arent bothered by it. But itchy costumes and jewels are a no-go in my house.

I can’t believe this is even an issue. You know? It just seems so ridiculous.

People dressing their dogs is not harmful to the dog. While some may carry it too far by others standards, it still is harmless and actually isn’t anyone elses business if a person wants to dress up their dog. I have put Halloween costumes on some of mine. I have dressed some of my rescues to attract attention to them so I can make people aware that this little dog is available for adoption. I have entered costume matches that we held for fun if our local dog clubs’ show fell on Halloween. I have one little dog that loves to have her coat on and will dance in circles when you get her coat out and she sees it! She loves it! I also have one little one that loves to wear hats. It’s almost as if she knew she were cute in her hat! But in general, I probably don’t put clothes on any dog more than once a year.

Do you have a specific question?
I think that it’s not right to dress up your dog 24/7 like a doll, especially if he/she doesn’t like it, but dressing up for warmth or special occasions like Halloween or Christmas seem fine.

I put a sweater on my puppy when it is cold outside, its a loose fitting sweater and I don’t think she minds it. I don’t care if people clothe their dogs, just as long as it isn’t in the middle of the summer, that’s just cruel.

its really up to the person if they want their dogs to look really stupid and put them in clothes. im just great full that im not one of them it really doesn’t make any sense to put dogs in something that they wouldn’t stay in the first place. dogs r just fine the way they r.

I agree with you. If your pet is uncomfortable in the clothes you make them wear, I don’t think that is fair for the dog. But most dogs that I know like to where a t shirt or sweater when they are cold. My dog has a very short coat, and we have a hoodie to keep her warm. She loves it because it keeps her warm, and we only put it on her when she goes outside, so she associates it with going outside. I don’t see any problem with it, just as long as you don’t take it too far, to the point that your dog is miserable, or that you are making them too hot.

I don’t really care for it when people dress their dogs up all the time, but I will put mine in a costume for Halloween just long enough to take a few pictures. My mom has a dog that is cold all the time and she puts her in a sweater during the winter to help her stay warm. I think if it is for warmth or if the dog really likes it then why not. Know matter what people do there will always be someone telling you that your wrong and try to show their opinion down your throat, but as long as your dog is healthy and happy then who cares what they think.

I live where it is cold and I have dogs that have very little hair and body fat, they LOVE their clothes! Clothes on a hairy dog is kinda stupid, but if the owners get some kind of kick from it, whatever.
Dog owner - Umm….hairless dogs come from places that are HOT? Kinda like the nordic breeds with their big thick coats come from places that are COLD? LMAO!!! Form follows function.

OK, I don’t actually see a “question” in your question, so I’ll just tell you what I think.
If the dog needs a sweater or a coat for protection from the weather, fine. For walking on salted sidewalks in the winter, boots are fine, too.
Dressing up a dog for the sake of fashion is simply human vanity. It’s a reflection on the owner, NOT the dog (cripes, they don’t dress THEMSELVES!), and personally, I don’t like it, but hey, it’s not my dog.
I do have a nice collection of bandanas for my dogs. They wear them once in awhile, for example, at dog-events or other community festivals.
I put a T-shirt on my dog once, just for laughs, and within 5 minutes he peed all over it, so, never again!

I work in a dog-grooming salon and am the owner of a tiny Maltese. As a dog owner living in a cold place, I admit I have a few sweaters for my dog to wear when I take him to outdoor events, especially at night. I do this because his fur is so silky thin that it can’t really lock in heat and keep him warm. But, as someone who works with dogs everyday, I can tell you that dressing up your dog can cause damage. There’s a client at the salon that dresses her dog up CONSTANLY. Her poor dog has developed skin problems because he cannot produce the natural oils needed to keep his skin and coat hydrated. We’ve told her to let her dog’s skin breath, but she just doesn’t seem to care about her dog’s skin…. Just his wardrobe.
I believe putting clothes on dogs is ok, but only to a certain extent.

I have to admit I have seen some pretty outrageous dog clothes. I am, however, guilty of putting polar fleece and sweaters on my pins in the winter time. If I don’t, there are days that they just refuse to go outside and do their business. They don’t do well in cold weather.
I am completely repulsed by the “wedding dress” on the pug kind of thing, though. Yuck!
