“no matter how old they get”
There’s the wild amazonian doodog that stays small until it’s 10 years old, and then it suddenly grows to the size of an irish wolfhound.
There are actually so many it would be hard to list them all but you need to do a lot of research and think about how much grooming time you want to spend. Many small breeds require as much if not more grooming to keep their “look” about them. A lot of people get these little dogs with all of this cute / pretty hair without realizing the cost and time that goes into keeping it that way. Stay away from mix breeds if you definitely want a small dog because even though you may get lucky and have one that will always fit in your pocket you could end up with a medium sized if not large dog. True story, I had a lady come into one of my stores one day with her dog and told me she got this cute little black puppy from one of the “SUPER PET STORES” (I won’t mention any names) and the young boy told her the pup would not get very big because of his relatively small feet. Well “Warren” is now a sweet, beautiful 124 lbs!!! Guess what his feet are still small compared to the rest of him!!! He looks like a Newfoundland / Lab mix. Just be cautious and give it a whole lot of thought and research.
Maltese, daschunds, beagles, pugs, chihuahuas, yorkies, boston terriers, miniature poodles, puggles (beagle/pug, very cute!), jack russel terriers, the list goes on and on!
Miniature Pincher
Miniature Rat Terrier. The Rat Terrier is a wonderful highly intelligent dogs. They love their people and they love to play in the water. They are very playful and loves to cuddly. They weight is between 4 and 8lbs.
Most terriers are small, but not all. Any breeds shown in the akc toy group will never get even knee high. How small do you want it? The Americn eskimo, (one of my favorites) doesn’t get bigger than say 35 pounds and it comes in a mini and toy veriety, like poodles. The bishon frise is small. I think the Alaskan Klee kai is also small but it isn’t AKC recognized.
