I’m moving away to college ideally, I just haven’t received any information from the school yet. I’ll be living by myself and would prefer to have a dog. What are some good breeds for people who live in apartments? Either small ( like French Bulldog size) or any large breed that can live in a small place.

English bulldog, french bulldog, and pug.
Also, just a side note, I’d wait a few months after school started to make sure you have time for a dog. College can be very demanding and until you are sure you can handle all the work, wait to get a dog. You’d hate to have to give it up because you were too busy all the time.

Newfoundlands are affectionate and can live in apartments, they also fall into the large dog catagory. Any toy breed does well in small homes. non-sporting dogs also do well. DO NOT get a hound, sporting hearding or terrier dog, they do not do well, and can develop hyper isolation anxiety which can cause destructive and agressive behavior.

greyhounds are EXCELLENT apartment dogs because they are basically couch potatoes! there are many greyhounds who are ex-racers who would otherwise be put down if not adopted! they do need exercise, a nice walk once or twice a day, but are wonderful and calm inside. english setters are also very calm indoors, but they require alot of outside exercise.

you can put in what you are looking for and it will give a list of dogs with their breed information included.

small dogs are great for apartments. but if given enough exercise dogs including golden retrievers can be great apartment dogs, but you must must must take them on walks and bring them to a park. do your homework and look up information about the breeds that you are interested in and most of the time the info that you find will inform you on whether they can be in apartments or not. just make sure you do your homework before you get a specific breed because issues could arise that you were not aware of in the beginning.

Make sure you will have the time and financials to care for a dog propperly. A lot of people will tell you shouldn’t have a dog in college, but as long as you are responsable, have your priorities straight, and money for proper care it can be done (myself, and many have my friends had dogs in college I even foster cared). I would not suggest a puppy, you should get an adult dog through a shelter, finding a shelter that fosters will help because they will be able to tell you if the dog is house broken, chews, does fine on it’s own, etc. I am a huge fan of rescueing retired greyhounds, they are smart, love to cuddle, fine alone all day, great running partners, but also pretty calm and laid back, they are great apartment dogs and ussually fully trained when adopted. If greyhounds aren’t your thing just look at rescues for an adult dog, house trained and used to being alone at home for work days, avoid breeds that are high energy like labs, herding breeds, and most hunting breeds, JRT’s, etc. Make sure that when alone your dog has plenty to entertain himself, walk him 2 times a day to tucker him out, and when home give him lots of attention since they are very social animals. Defenately a small breed. I would’nt get a terrier because they are so enterjetic, they need room to run. On animalplanet.com you can go to dog breed selector and read about each breed.

I was going to say pug, however, no matter what breed you get, it needs to be trained well. I have seen some pugs that were a blessing, and some that were nightmares, and training is the key. There are 17 pet friendly colleges, so you can look into that and the criteria they each have for pets is different, most will only let you have small breeds.

Well, if you live in an apt, you don’t want a noisy dog for sure because you don’t want to hear complain about your doggy all the time.
I live in an apt which is not a dog friendly and I always hide my dog in my purse whenever I want to go out, I have a 4lb 3 yr old long hair Chihuahua, Chihuahuas are usually noisy and they bark on nothing, but thanks god he is supper quite. I don’t want to recommend Chihuahua to you or any other breed.
If you are looking to adopt or buy a dog:
1.You need to see which breed is your favorite? – If you are planning to go to school, I recommend small dogs to you. You can potty train your dog and you don’t need to go out to walk him/her every day. That’s a good thing about small dogs. Big dogs need to run and you need to spend much more time with them.
2.You need to see what kind of personality are you looking for in your dog? Every dog has different personality? You need to pay attention to all details and their behaviors. Chewing, gaping, biting…
3.If you want a puppy: you need to spend time and money on training. Good point: he/she will attach to you very well… but if you want a full grown dog: it is better to find a well trained one.
4.DON’T BUY A DOG FROM BREEDERS, ADOPT ONE FROM SHELTERS…

Any breed can life in an apartment as long as you can dedicate yourself to exercizing and training the dog.
You might want to see first if you have the time and finances to care for a dog.. most college students are busy with school, studying, and maintaining a job, that they really dont have the time to properly care for a pet. Then comes the finances.. I so often see health questions in here.. and included in the question “Im a college student, so I dont have much money..” Dogs do occasionally get sick or injured.. you need to assure you can afford to properly care for the animal.

Back during college days there was a young man (from a wealthy family) that would buy puppies and kittens each semester, and then find himself in the position of having no one to care for them when he travelled… Lots of rentals require deposits for pets, and even more landlords ban pets entirely…
College life requires a commitment to homework, long hours at the library and having a social life… The last thing you need is a dog… You’ll have plenty of friends to have fun with and you won’t have the time or the additional income to expend on a pet…
It’s sad that films like “Legally Blonde” inspire such wrecklessness with pets, but you won’t be allowed to tote a pint-sized dog into classrooms and a dog is not a fashion accessory.
Wait until college is finished and you have the time, the expendable income and a home of your own before getting a dog… In the meantime, get a plant or a goldfish… Cheers!

I think a small and calm dog would be the best dog for a apartments cause you do not want your dog to be barking all the time and disturb your neighbors. They will most likely complain and you will get kicked out or have to get ride of your dog and ones you get attached to your dog you will never want to get ride of it..So…….i recommend that you get a boston terrier.Good Luck!
