I’m going to be living on my own this summer, and my roommate and I need some dogs to feel secure. What are some breeds that make good guard dogs? We going to need breeds that are fast, powerful, and intelligent.
I will be taking my dad’s Plott Hound with me, very loud dog, but she’s too friendly. Not very strong or smart either. We plan on getting about three, excluding the Plott Hound.

i suggest the police dogs which are the german shepard and its great for its personality and its also very strong and has good sense of hearing and listening, also the ones gangster use which can be pitbuls because they are extremely aggresive axcept with their owners. good luck.

I would say large breeds of dogs such as the Mastiff, or Rottweiler, but a two dogs I would recommend you getting that fits the description of powerful fast and intelligent, are the Doberman or German Shepherd. Both of these breeds will do… since they are agile, breed to be guards and are extremely intelligent and independent, have great hearing and alerting instincts and are very wary of strangers unlike Pit Bulls that are breed to be human- friendly but are often used for guarding purposes .

A dog of any kind will deter criminals. Why do you think you need some big powerful dog? If you and your roommate need dogs to protect you then you are not going to be living alone. Also, the real world isn’t that scary and if your neighborhood is then I suggest finding a better neighborhood.
I suggest dogs that are bred for this, German Shepherd, Dobe, Rottie, Bully’s, and the like. Just keep in mind the risk and liability of having a guard dog you train yourself vs one that is trained by a pro. Going to the pound and finding a large dog might be a better idea. Size alone, even in the nicest of dogs, is very intimidating.

Dobermans are very loyal, intelligent dogs. They do need exercise and training and they do not mature until about 3 years old. If you can put the time into a Dobe, then you will have a friend/guard dog for about 12 years. These dogs are extremely intelligent and can be taught to do just about anything. Mine rides skateboards. Do not get one if you are wanting to turn him into a vicious dog. Dobe’s will be loyal to the death if they are treated like family by their owners. There is no need for hardcore guard training. It comes naturally for them as this was what they were bred for. Good Luck!

German Shepperds, Doberman Pinchers, Rottweilers, Chows, and Pit Bull. The Pit Bull I would tell you to watch out, because they have been known to turn on their owners, even though mine hasn’t.

If you want security, get an alarm or a gun. Dogs are not a reliable security system, and they take a lot of time and money to take care of. If you won’t feel secure without 3 guard dogs, find a better neighborhood to live in.

A sausage dog
haha just kidding.
Um… mainly any dog could be a good guard-dog if you trained it well. Mostly dobermans, bulldogs, german shepards or rottweilers

I would suggest a german shepard because they are very intelligent, strong and easy to train. They have been used in warfare and are used by the police today. I think that a german shepard would be your best choice.
