Where can i research dog breeds in order to find out what dog breed is best for me and my girlfriend?
30 Oct 2008
My girlfriend wants a Norwich Terrier, i think they are cute but i would like to know what else is out there?
Does anyone know where i can research the different breeds, i would like to see a gallery with pics of the dog breeds so i can quickly find the breed that looks the best to me.
Personally i prefer something that is not too girly such as puddles and other toy dogs.
I think the Norwich Terrier is originally a fox hunter, so it is not too girly.
If you know of any other similar dog breeds, please let me know.
Thanks
I would like to look at a gallery where all the pictures of dogs will be on the same page instead of having to click on one link at a time

This starts with breeds A-C and then you have to click on. Try going to a local dog show that way you can meet the dogs you are thinking of going with. Not only that but you will be able to talk to breeders that are looking to improve their breeding stock by showing.

It’s not like a WKC site where it lists all the specifications of each breed, but it has real live dogs…millions of them, and it is personal webpage of sorts. Each dog will be differnent as each page will be. Just take your time and research.
Failing that, here’s the WKC site
Sorry, but to have a good search, you need to read and flip through pages and pages of info.

is a really good site. My only qualm is that is has hybrid “designer” dogs. Other than that, the quality of information is good and there are a lot of pictures.
You can search by category:
Take a breed quiz:
or search the photo gallery by size:
If you find a breed of dog you like, and want to adopt one from a shelter or rescue center in your area look at: they often have puppies and purebreds looking for a home!
I hope this is helpful! I applaud you in your wanting to research dogs and find an ideal breed, it will only make your relationship and understanding of the dog you pick better. Good luck!

This will depend on where you live, however in Vic Australia, we have the Victorian Canine Association. You should have a dog association in your state, which provide lists of breeds, breeder contact details and usually pics. I would recommend speaking to breeders or other people who have the breed dog you are looking at, as there may be behavioural traits that do not suit your lifestyle. Beagles, for example, being scent hounds require VERY secure fences (usually buried to avoid digging under) and can be stubborn dogs. Kelpies are reknown for being able to jump extremely high, and need quite a lot of exercise. Other breeds, such as maltese, poodles etc, require regular clipping and many people purchase them as they do not “shed”, without considering the fact they need to be clipped every 6 weeks!
I will give you the link for the victorian canine association, just to give you an idea of the sort of club I mean, and it has some info about breeds under the Breed tab, just remember that each country has different breeds available!
Staffys (staffordshire terriors, rather than american staffy’s) are becoming a very popular breed. They are very loyal, intelligent but can be stubborn!
Also check out your local shelter, such as RSPCA, to see what dogs or pups are available - this way you are providing a much needed home!
Good luck and I’m sure you will pick a great breed!

Take this quiz to pick the traits you want in a dog and it will tell you what breed fits your preferences:
To see pictures all on one page go here:
There is one page for each size category: small, medium, large, extra large
NEW NOTE ADDED: Shut up - my answer is soooo NOT a bad answer

ONLY at the AKC SITE!!!! akc.org
Norwich are EXTREMELY rare,VERY hard to find & PRICY!
Be VERY careful who you contact-there’s been a recent spate of MUT/MOMGREL***CRAP*** imported & passed on as REAL Norwich when they re barely even Cairn crosses!!
I’ve been doing Norwich since ‘71,show,breed,test/trial & hunt/work them! Have ***2*** litters coming…which is dang near MIRACULOUS!!!
Check out the Border Terrier-NOT B.collie!!!!- as well.
VERY neat small,hardy beasts.
PS: Norwich,Borders,Cairn,.WHWT,etc,etc….are HAND-STRIPPED BREEDS! NEVER clipper em!It RUINS the coat!
