American Foxhound

The American Foxhound is a large impressive looking breed that closely resembles a Beagle in looks. An American Foxhound’s height is between 21 and 25 inches and the weight ranges from 65 to 75 pounds. This breed’s sleek athletic body is well covered with a short coat that ranges from black, tan and white, tan and white or red and white color combinations. The admirable speed of this excellent hunter is attributed to the well boned strong legs.

The American Foxhound is believed to be in existence in the Crown Colony - long before it was given the name America. The American Foxhound breedhave evolved from the hunting dogs brought by Robert Brooke to the Crown Colony in 1650.

In Great Britain, these dogs were highly acclaimed for their excellent hunting abilities. These dogs are favorite hunting companions of the British landed gentry. In a fox hunt, hunters on horseback follow packs of American Foxhounds. Hunters will know if a prey is found by the change in the melodious barking of the hounds. Settlers of the New World utilize these dogs to hunt foxes as well. Because of the ferocious nature, the dogs are believed to have been used by the English military commanders to track Indians.

The crossing between English Hounds and the dogs of Irish and French settlers resulted to the development of a new breed - the American Foxhound. A new breed, the American Foxhound was developed.

The American Foxhound was actually developed to be a hunting dog. An American Foxhound would be in its element if it is chasing a prey. The breed is endowed with an excellent scenting ability, an impressive stamina and a courageous and intense drive. An American Foxhound is an intense hunter, once a prey is sighted, the dog will not stop until the animal is taken. As the breed name suggests, foxes are the usual prey of these dogs although these hunting dogs will not pass up the chance to run after any animal.That the dog will be highly valued by hunter is a given fact.

American Foxhounds are acclaimed for their intense hunting drives. Although the dogs exhibit a courageous and tenacious temperament when hunting, American Foxhounds have a sweet and gentle personality. American Foxhounds have gained a reputation for being courageous and tenacious hunters but in the company of its human family the dogs turn into gentle well mannered companions. Unlike other breeds, American Foxhound does not give its loyalty to just one person. These hunting dogs form a strong bond with the family but these dogs are noted to bond closely with the children.
