Successful jack russell terrier training is not attained with one training tactic alone. In fact, an owner has a lot of training options to take into consideration in order to make successful training happen. One is the use of hand signals in combination with the verbal instructions.

Being a particularly intelligent breed, a jack russell terrier is very observant of the human’s gesture, movements and even emotional state. One may feel sad or depressed if the owner feels the same or will certainly get excited if he sense the excitement in his master’s voice and movements.

Here are a few reasons why it’s best to consider training your pet to understand hand signals:

  • Although you always want your canine friend to keep close to you, you cannot avoid the fact that he may have to run off in some instances - be it to retrieve the ball, chase someone, hunt in the field or run the agility course. The distance makes it hard for your dog to hear your verbal command but with hand gesture, you can be at ease knowing that you are still able to control and keep him safe.
  • Your hunting dog will usually refer on you as to what is supposed to be done with the quarry he has captured. You may use hand signals to inform him whether to hold in place or bolt the groundhog, badger or other animals he has captured.
  • When working with hand signals during dog training, you can be certain that your pet is focused on you realizing that he must watch out for your signals and commands.
  • A dog with hearing disability can be trained using this approach.
  • Noisy places like busy streets and park can make it difficult for your jack russell terrier to hear your verbal commands. But so long as you are within the viewing range of your dog, you can still direct him of what he needs to do specifically during critical situations.
