There is nothing worse than the incessant barking of a dog. If it`s our dog that`s making the noise then it`s a real problem. We live on top of each other and this kind of behaviour can cause neighbour disputes and even eviction in apartments if it is deemed that we are not in control of our dog.. However barking dog training is easy to undertake provided you have the best equipment.
You cannot expect you dog to stop barking altogether that would be similar to asking a human being never to talk. In any case a barking dog is second to none as a burgler alarm.
We need to teach our dog when it is appropriate to bark and when it isn`t. There are several good reasons why dogs bark. Excitement, attention seeking and communication are all reasons why dogs bark. Command barks, need barks, playful barks, alarm barks and warning barks are all legitimate. Continuous barking is a behavioural problem.
With persistence your dog could be trained to bark on command and as a by product of this, to be quiet on command. It’s not terribly easy to teach your dog this command so if you prefer there are a few devices that you can use which can give you a rapid solution.
1 Ultrasonic devices.
Ultrasonic devices can be placed in your garden, they automatically emit a high pitched sound when a dog nearby barks, this distracts the dog and stops the barking. A few versions exist of this device, they are collars, stand alone and handheld. Collar devices are as described, they automatically sound when the dog barks. Stand alone devices are placed either in your garden or home Your neighbour’s dog can also be quietened by a stand alone device placed in the gardenWith handheld ultrasonic devices you simply press the button when you want to deliver a correction. These are a useful addition to your arsenal if you encounter barking dogs when out walking or jogging.
2 Spray Devices.
These generally come in the form of citronella no-bark collars. They automatically spray citronella, which most dogs do not like, every time the dog barks thus providing negative reinforcement to the bark.
3 Electronic.
In professional dog training circles electronic bark collars are considered to offer a much faster and reliable method for gaining the desired result compared with the two above. Electronic bark collars are considered by some to be cruel or inhumane. The modern electronic collar is very clever and not at all cruel as they might have been a few years ago. They give the dog a small electric shock whern he barks The first and mildest shock is triggered by the dog’s first bark The shock is increased slightly if the dog bark again within 30 seconds otherwise it resets The shock is gradually stepped up to its 6th and final level if the dog continues to bark There are lots of safety measures built in now, for instance, if your dog barks fifteen times during a period of 50 seconds the collar shuts off for three minutes and resets.
So that is all there is to it. It is a straightforward exercise to stop dog barking No expertise is needed using one of the three barking dog training methods outlined above and it is usually quickly resolved.
