The summer months are perhaps the best months for both dog and owner.Long warm days give way to mild evenings with long daylight hours, making the perfect conditions for walking. For dog owners across the country there can be little better than a quick early morning walk with their pooch. In fact a walk with the dog is a daily exercise routine for many, with the animal benefiting too. But don’t forget that with summer comes new, unwelcome dangers to your dog.
BBQ Parties
A BBQ is often the highlight of the summer. It is common that when you are outside cooking your dog will be enjoying the garden with you.But do you realise that by allowing your dog to roam free around a BBQ you could be putting it in a dangerous situation? The dog will not understand that the BBQ is hot, possibly until it is too late. If your dog is lively and excitable it could easily crash into the BBQ, or trip you up. Furthermore, the food that we humans love to consume is simply not good for your dog.You may think it will do no harm to offer him a burger or sausage and the likelihood is that he will beg for more.Greasy human food offers your dog no nutritional or health benefits and your dog will always ask for more.Instead, offer him a tasty bowl of his favourite dog food. Bones are another hazard, so never let your dog eat chicken wings or pork chops.
Water at every Occasion
Water is an essential part of any dogs daily feeding routineAs the months get warmer it becomes even more important. When at home you should always supply a clean bowl full of fresh water. If out with the dog remember to take some water and a bowl with you so whenever your dog appears thirsty you can offer him a drink. He will probably thank you with lots of wags of the tail!
Dogs in Cars
You should never, ever leave your dog alone in your car for a prolonged period of time, especially in times of hot weather. A hot car can be fatal for a dog.If you know you are going somewhere where your dog is not allowed to visit please leave him at home. Never be tempted to just leave him in the car – there really is no excuse!
Animal Friendly Sun Screen
Like us, dogs can be negatively affected by the sun.You can protect your dog with pet friendly sun screen (don’t be tempted to use human sun screen). A dog’s nose and ears can be particularily affected, so make sure you apply a good layer of sun screen to these areas.
