The Wonderful Boxer Dog as a Breed
27 Feb 2010
Boxers were initially bred from the (now extinct) Bullenbeisser and an English Bulldog in Germany. They have short hair, are of medium-size and have stocky bodies. They are generally fawn or brindled with or without white markings.
About 20-25% of Boxers are “white Boxers,” which means they have white markings covering over 1/3 of their coat. These white Boxer dogs are not albino, but they are more likely to be deaf in one or both ears (about 18% of white Boxers experience deafness).
Boxers can range in size and weight. Males are usually 22-25 inches tall and 65-75 lbs while females are usually 21-23.5 inches tall and 50-60 lbs. Boxers usually have 6-8 puppies in a litter and their expected life span is 10-12 years.
Boxers’ broad, short skulls and under bite may look fierce, (and certainly, they can be when mistreated), but their bright, playful, and energetic personalities make them a perfect family pet. Boxers are generally well-mannered and great with kids. In case you wanted the technical side of the breed. Here’s the AKC description.
Here’s a quote from the AKC regarding the true breed standard.
“The character of the Boxer is of the greatest importance and demands the most solicitous attention. He is renowned from olden times for his great love and faithfulness to his master and household. He is harmless in the family, but distrustful of strangers, bright and friendly of temperament at play, but brave and determined when aroused. His intelligence and willing tractability, his modesty and cleanliness make him a highly desirable family dog and cheerful companion. He is the soul of honesty and loyalty, and is never false or treacherous even in his old age. ”
