How You Can Stop Your Dog From Chewing
10 Dec 2009
Who hasn’t sacrificed a newspaper, a pillow or the leg of a chair to there pets chewing routine. When it comes to your pets chewing, the question should be how can I redirect the chewing not how can I halt the chewing.
You’re not going too completely halt your pets chewing. Dogs just have to chew.
Being your dog is going to chew, give him plenty of things to choose from.
Start gathering up multiple types of chew toys that you can provide him with. Be sure that you put as many different items as you can in the areas that he spends most of his time. This should speed things along and help to keep your pet from gnawing on the expensive items.
Regularly inspect the toys and get rid of the really worn out ones. Try all kinds of toys until your dog finds the ones that he really loves the most.
Ranting and raving when your dog is chews on anything is not a very good long term solution. Instead of punishing your pet, let’s go ahead and reinforce the positive.
When your pet is just about to gnaw on anything he shouldn’t firmly give the no command and give him a chew toy. Give your dog a pet and praise whenever they choose a toy over something else.
There are also a few ways to make the chewing unpleasant for your dog.
You can try what is known as the scat mat. Scatter them around in the areas that you want your dog to avoid. Don’t worry the scat mat is basically harmless.
There is the option of putting a certain unpleasant tasting formula on those few things he chews on that he is not supposed to. You should be able to find these things at the nearest pet store. These ideas may be way out there but they are other ideas.
You are not going to halt your dog from chewing but you can direct him towards chewing the proper things.
