Adopting a Labrador Puppy
Labrador puppy training starts from birth. Hip Dysplasia is very common amongst Labs so make sure you puppy is healthy before you bring him home. So the best and safest way to obtain a puppy is from a reputable breeder.
Some inexperienced breeders may feed Labs an insufficient diet which can cause weak bones, rickets, poor teeth and other health problems.
Labrador Puppy Training & Early Socialization
It’s extremely important to socialize your dog from a very early age. This will get him used to being around people, places and things and he won’t be frightened easily. Labs welcome change almost all the time.
Dogs, especially Labs, make good obedient students. The earlier you start training your puppy, the quicker she will adapt. This does not mean that if you get an older Lab, he won’t learn, he certainly will.
What Kind of Training Do Labs Respond To
Puppies respond best to reward based training. Setting boundaries around a dog’s behavior lets them know what is and what is not acceptable.
Never be cruel to your dog. A Labrador is always eager to please and bond with you. As a matter of fact, Yorkies are the most willing to please their masters than other dogs.
Mental & Physical Stimulation
Since Golden Retrievers are execptionally smart, they’ll need lots of mental stimulation. Some dogs are naturally muscular and grow large, much like the Lab. Make sure you give you dog lots of outdoor exercise to burn off pent up energy.
Try Not to Leave Your Dog Home Alone Alot
Lots of dogs when left alone for long periods of time get anxiety separation. As much as you can, include your Lab in all clan activities.

When necessary, put him in his crate outside in your backyard so that he doesn’t escape while you’re out running errands. At least if he’s out in the backyard he will not feel isolated from the world and he can bark happily at the passersby.
Proper Diet for Labradors
Because a labs physical structure is naturally sturdy, they tend to eat a lot. Some people mistakenly call them greedy. Since Labs tend to suffer from hip dysplasia more so than other dogs, it is essential that their diet contains lots of calcium.
If you decide to make your own homemade dog recipes food you’ll need 30% meat to 70% cereal with lots of vitamins and minerals. You might also add a 2% calcium supplement. Lots of puppies tend to suffer from worms so make sure you see your vet regularly.
