House Break Your Puppy Using the Crate Method

What a great thing it is for the family to bring home a new puppy. We all love playing with the new puppy. Of course, there is one aspect of the new puppy no one likes-the puppy thinks the whole world is his toilet. Crate training puppies is the easiest and best way to deal with the whole house training process. Trust me on this, because I used to try it old school, using the newspaper on the floor method.I can tell you that the paper method beat doing nothing at all, but it was still at first a hit and miss proposition, and I hated cleaning up the misses. One dark night on the way to the bathroom, I stepped right onto a steaming accident my puppy had just deposited quite distant from his newspaper, and made up my mind to buy a crate the next day.
The crate training method for puppy house training is a system that greatly reduces the number of “accidents” that will most likely happen around the house before your puppy has been thoroughly house trained. To properly use the crate training system the puppy must stay inside his crate unless someone is paying attention to him (for example during playtime, or feeding he should always be supervised). Murphy’s Law says the moment you take your eyes off your puppy, he’ll pick that moment to go potty in the house.
- Crate training puppies will work best if you keep the crate and the puppy inside it near you whenever possible. For example, if you are at home working in your office, keep him in the crate in your office with you. This also serves the purpose of you being able to keep tabs on the puppy and see or hear when he needs a potty break. Don’t let him out frequently just because he is bored, but be sure to let him out if it seems like it is time for potty .
- Your puppy will always need to go potty very shortly after waking up from a nice nap, so be alert for when you hear him wake up and make some noises. He will also need to go within 30 minutes or so after eating or drinking, so don’t put him back into is crate if he has just had a meal until he has first taken care of business. If you always bring him to the same area to relieve himself and reward him for a job well done, you will be positively reinforcing him to go where you want him to learn to go.
- Give him his food and then lots of exercise by playing and maybe a little training so the he is ready for a nice rest when he goes back in his crate. This way, he’ll take a nice long nap-up to a couple hours, and he won’t be bored in his crate.
- The key to making the crate training work best for your puppy is to be very consistent with the training. It is very likely that you’ll find some accidents happening if you don’t keep him in the crate unless he is supervised. Even after you clean up the evidence, the puppy can still smell those “marked” spots and he will be more likely to repeat the behavior. Remember, if your puppy does have an occasional accident, don’t hit him or yell at him. If you catch him just starting or about to start, say “no” to get his attention, then quickly lead him outside to the spot he uses. Always remain on the positive side, praising and reward, but not yelling or hitting. Like anything else, the closer you adhere to the crate training system’s methods, the quicker and better the progress you will see.
The crate training technique was so much simpler and neater and easier that the paper on the floor method. I was happy to see that within a couple weeks, more or less, my puppy already had the idea and was pretty much house trained already. I did lose a little sleep at first if he whined at night, but I made sure the puppy didn’t eat late or drink very much before going to bed for the night, so that wasn’t as big a problem as I would have thought. If you always make the crate seem like a den, rather than a place to put your puppy when you are mad at him, he will have a good attitude about going in there, and you shouldn’t have the whining problem some puppies have when in the crate.
So, if you are about to get or just got a new puppy you will be smart to use this crate training method for house training your new pet.
