You can use a dog crate for many things besides keeping your dog and home safe while you are away. For your dog the crate can be a haven within your home for comfort and safety. A dog create is one of the more expensive things you will buy for your dog. You want to find a durable crate that will be with you for the life of your dog. Your dog should feel comfortable in the crate.

The first thing you will need to determine when buying a dog crate is the proper size. The crate needs to be large enough to enable your dog to stand up, lie down, and turn around comfortably. When a crate has too much room a dog may choose one part in which to sleep and another to use as a bathroom.

When buying a crate for a puppy buy a crate that will fit the full grown size of the dog. A crate divider can be used to create a smaller area that can expand as your puppy does. Wire and plastic are the two most commonly available types of large dog crates. The right kind for your dog will depend on your local climate and if you want to take your dog with you on air trips.

Large wire dog crates will provide better ventilation and are often better for warmer climates or dogs with long hair. The best choice for colder areas and short haired dogs are plastic crates as they let your dog retain more heat. If you are planning air travel with your dog you must have a plastic dog crate. After you select your crate you can add some accessories. Some of the more typical crate accessories are toys, treats, a crate bed, and a crate cover.

Dog crate pads or beds will allow your dog to have extra comfort in the crate. Your dog will have additional privacy with a crate cover and toys will help prevent your dog from getting bored.
